Ghazali is a clever student. He studies religious and scientific facts very hard in his madrasa. He reads many books and always makes notes from these books. His teachers agree that he will be a great scholar in the future. One day, Ghazali sets off for a faraway city by a caravan. But some bandits stop the caravan on the road. The bandits have swords and they show no mercy to the travellers. They take all the travellers’ money and valuable possessions. One of the bandits approaches Ghazali and starts searching him for something precious. Ghazali has a small bundle of notes from his lessons in his lap. The bandit tries to take this bundle but Ghazali doesn’t want to give it to him. ‘‘Don’t touch it. These are my notes,’’ Ghazali explains. ‘‘I am a student and I gain knowledge. These notes are very important for me. They are useless to you. What are you going to do with them?’’But the bandit does not listen to the young student. ‘‘Give all these stuff to me,’’he yells at Ghazali angrily. He thinks that there is gold or jewellery in the bundle. The bandit insists on trying to take it but Ghazali does not yield. The dispute grows between the bandit and the young student. Soon the head of the bandits hears about it. Two of the bandits take Ghazali to the head bandit. The head bandit gazes at the young boy scornfully. ‘‘What is your problem?’’ he asks ‘‘Why do you resist my men? Are you crazy or do you want your own death?’’ ‘‘I have my notes in this bundle,’’ explains Ghazali, ‘‘your men want to take them, but they are very valuable to me.’’ The head bandit takes the bundle from Ghazali and opens it. He just sees a few drafts of notes. There is nothing precious in the bundle. He checks the papers closely, ‘‘Yes, these are just notes,’’ he says. ‘‘But I don’t understand one point. When I take these notes away from you, do you lose all your knowledge and become an ordinary, ignorant man like me? Is the only difference between you and me a few papers?’’ Ghazali looks at the ground in shame. ‘‘If so,’’ the robber continues, ‘‘You must know this, knowledge on paper is not knowledge at all. Knowledge is precious when it is in heads. The mind is the true house of knowledge.’’ The head bandit gives the notes back to Ghazali and rides away with his men. Ghazali gets his precious notes back but he is thoughtful. He thinks about the robber’s words. ‘‘Yes, the robber is right,’’ he says to himself, ‘‘fire can easily burn these papers, wind may take them away, water can ruin them and even a thief can steal them. So, this cannot be real knowledge.’’ He learns a very big lesson from the robber and from that day on, he puts all the knowledge in his mind.
